universal suffrage

universal suffrage
Also known as franchise. Refers to the extension of the right to vote, to all adults, without distinction as to race, sex, belief or social status. In most old established democracies, only a limited number of people at first had a say in the running of the government but the number of people who could vote increased gradually with time. The nineteenth century featured movements advocating universal male suffrage – the extension to all males regardless of social class or race. This right later spread to women in the twentieth century.
